Exploring Opportunities of artificial intelligence design through SCOT lens
Abstract
New technologies pose new challenges in design. With the rapid development of artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, and many other data-driven technologies, some voices claim that participatory design (PD) is no longer viable in AI design. This paper attempts to understand participatory design from Trevor J. Pinch and Weibe E. Bijker’s Social Construction of Technology (SCOT) perspective, and efforts to explore opportunities of PD in the future technology-related design. Discussion in this paper revolves around four key components of SCOT: “interpretive flexibility”, “relevant social group”, “closure and stabilization”, and “critiques of SCOT”. The conclusion presents a positive attitude towards combining SCOT theory on PD practice.
